December is here so it’s time for me to share my top picks for keeping warm this winter and the things to look out for (read pitfalls) according to your body type.
Don’t get me wrong, on a sub-zero temperature day, throw these ‘rules’ out of the window and wear what the heck you like to keep warm, but generally speaking there will be flattering knits for you as well as absolute no no’s and it’s my job to keep you aware!
Please note, if you are slim and evenly balanced from top to toe, you can pretty much wear what you like when it comes to knitwear so go with what feels exciting to you.
If you carry your weight on your top half, (boobs, tummy, all over) then jumpers are most certainly not your best friend. Don’t despair though, there are plenty of other gorgeously flattering options that will work well.
Do: Wear longer-line loose jumpers, ponchos and wraps and keep your lower half straight and structured.
Don’t: Wear short jumpers that finish on your tummy, wear very thick or textured fabrics (unless you’re slim), add pockets or embellishment around your middle area.
Wraps and ponchos
I adore this look. Many women with a top heavy figure type also have wonderfully slim legs. A wrap layered over a long-sleeved top, paired with some straight legged or skinny jeans or trousers and chunky boots is one of my all-time favourite looks for women with top heavy figure types. Many of my clients struggle with casual wear but in my opinion during the winter months, this is a sure fire winner.
An absolute must, if you are top heavy, is a longer hemline such as this gorgeous cashmere number.
If you have a slim but slightly top heavy figure type, this oversized roll neck could be a good option for you. It’s loose enough to skim over any little lumps and bumps and the longer length will draw attention to your slim thighs.
As a ‘smaller-on-top’ pear shaped woman you have your pick of jumpers! But first, are you 100% sure you are pear shaped? This is the figure type that is most commonly confused with hourglass.
Here’s the difference:
Hourglass: Same size all over (dress size on top is the same as on the bottom). Your shoulders are in line with your hips and you have a small waist. You don’t need to have big boobs and a bottom, it’s about your proportions. (Scroll down for hourglass options).
Pear: Very probably a dress size smaller on top. Shoulders are narrower than your hips. You feel your weight gain on your bottom, thighs and or hips.
Do: Keep hemlines shorter. Around hip level or above should work well. Have fun with colour, texture and print on top (if that suits your style). Slim pears will wear this season’s polo necks very well.
Don’t: Wear long line jumpers which finish across your bottom or on your thighs. Wear ‘waterfall cardigans’ that add volume around your widest part.
This season polo necks are THE jumper to be seen in. Your figure type wears them best. Wear on its own or layered underneath another jumper, cardigan, dress or jacket.
Adding bulk to your top half evens out your lower half. Clever eh?
Pockets and embellishment
Where top heavy figures ought to avoid fuss and detail on top, you can go for it with bells on! Pockets at waist level, Christmas logos and jewelled embellishment all work well for your body type so if they suit your style too, go for it!
For a classy and elegant evening look, try a sleeveless (or cap-sleeved which broadens your shoulders) roll neck teamed with a leather skirt or wide-legged trousers and a statement watch or bracelet. Simply stunning.
Hourglass (evenly balanced with a smaller waist)
Slim hourglass: Wear what the heck you like BUT bear the rules below in mind – they might make a nice difference to you even though you are slim.
- Choose open necklines to break up your torso. This is instantly slimming.
- Open cardigans and wraps are more flattering than jumpers/sweaters. Always belt a wrap or poncho.
- Stick to darker colours which are more slimming than lighter colours.
- Watch your hemlines. Avoid the hemline of your top finishing on a wider part of your body.
- Wear fabrics that gently hug your body so that your waist isn’t completely hidden or alternatively wear a belt.
A figure hugging jumper will show off your curves. Belting a jumper is a nice option for you.
